About this Social Media Toolkit

This toolkit is designed to help our partners spread the word about the GW Cancer Center’s online courses. The GW Cancer Center Online Academy promotes patient-centered care through quality training for public health and health care professionals from diverse backgrounds. Studies show that online learning increases knowledge of a particular subject area and promotes the delivery of effective patient care 1Use this resource to plan and implement marketing efforts within your own region to increase the awareness and use of the GW Cancer Center Online Academy’s educational resources.

About the GW Cancer Center Online Academy

The GW Cancer Center offers several online courses as part of the center’s technical assistance efforts to support health care professionals in providing patient-centered care. The GW Cancer Center Online Academy trainings are free and offer no-cost continuing education credits. Continuing education credits are available for health educators (CHES®/ MCHES®), nurses (accredited by the Maryland Nurses Association), physicians (AMA PRA Category 1 Credit™), and social workers (accredited by the National Association for Social Workers).

Courses include:

  • Action for Policy, Systems and Environmental (PSE) Change: A Training: This training provides background information on the seven-step PSE change process, stepwise worksheets, a PSE action plan template, real world examples from comprehensive cancer control programs, an extensive resource list and approaches to help grow the PSE change evidence base.
  • Cancer Survivorship E-Learning Series for Primary Care Providers: This course is intended for anyone who provides follow-up care to cancer survivors. The course covers late and long-term effects of treatment as well as special topics in cancer survivorship care.
  • Communication Training for Comprehensive Cancer Control Professionals 101 and 102: This two-part series on cancer control communication covers media planning and media relations (101) as well as making communication campaigns evidence-based (102). Each course is designed for public health professionals with varying degrees of experience and resources.
  • Executive Training on Navigation and Survivorship: This training covers patient navigation and clinical cancer survivorship program development and implementation. Learners include administrators, comprehensive cancer control practitioners, nurses, physicians, patient navigators and social workers.
  • Oncology Patient Navigator Training: The Fundamentals: This competency-based training uses interactive presentations to discuss evidence-based approaches to patient navigation and case studies to prepare patient navigators to effectively address barriers to care for cancer patients and survivors. This course provides the fundamentals all navigators should know regardless of education, background, or setting.
  • Together, Equitable, Accessible, Meaningful (TEAM) Training: The training identifies strategies that health care providers can employ to improve culturally sensitive practices. It aims to improve the productivity of patient-provider interactions to advance health equity through individual and systems-level approaches.

Things to Consider When Promoting the Online Academy

The GW Cancer Center’s online courses can be promoted through a variety of channels. When planning a dissemination and marketing strategy, it is important to first define your audience and gather information about how best to reach them. Consider the following questions:

Who is my primary audience?

  • Physicians
  • Nurses
  • Health care administrators or managers
  • Patient Navigators
  • Social workers
  • Public health professionals
  • Health educators
  • Cancer control professionals

How can I creatively engage the primary audience?
Social media engagement is a great starting point in engaging your audience. This toolkit provides pre-populated imagery and messaging that you can use to get started. These messages are tailored for use on different social media platforms. Consider tagging (@) or using hashtags (#) to draw attention to relevant professional associations in your messages. These professional associations may also benefit from using this toolkit. Share the toolkit in your coalition communications to encourage your area’s professional associations to promote these educational opportunities through their social media messaging. Examples of cancer-related professional organizations, many of which have local affiliates, include:

In addition to online promotion, use the Online Academy to onboard new employees and coalition members.

Where is your audience looking for professional vs. personal content?
Consider where your primary audience looks for professional education opportunities. In addition to directly contacting the professional associations above, word of mouth is the most common method of sharing learning experiences. Other avenues for sharing information about the Online Academy include but are not limited to coalition and coalition member newsletter, email blasts and institutional announcements.

What types of messages will motivate my audience to take action?
Messages should be concise, relevant, easy-to-understand, accurate and in active voice. Use bold text or capital letters strategically2. Messages with direct links to courses encourage people to take action. Indicate that free continuing education credits are available upon completion.
